Το 1482 ο Leonardo da Vinci ήταν 30 ετών, δεν ήταν διάσημος και προσπαθούσε να προβάλλει τον εαυτό του και τις ικανότητές του σε έναν υποψήφιο εργοδότη του.

Ανάμεσα στα άλλα έγραφε λοιπόν:

8. In case of need I will make big guns, mortars, and light ordnance of fine and useful forms, out of the common type.
